Unpacking the Alphabet: LGBTI people, their experiences of violence and implications for the Family Violence sector

• Are you interested in ways to effectively challenge and interrupt homophobia and transphobia?

NTV would like to offer you the opportunity to participate in a ½ day professional development workshop which will be talking about LGBTI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex) people and their experiences of violence and abuse.

While the vast majority of prevention and counselling work is geared toward heterosexual relationships between cis-gendered people, this special workshop will be an opportunity to gain an insight into experiences of violence and abuse in the many other kinds of intimate relationships which exist in society.

The four speakers on the day will be Daniel Witthaus, Karen Parker, George Munro and Kylie Lloyd.

Daniel Witthaus
Apart from working with NTV/MRS since 2007, Daniel is also founder and CEO of the National Institute for Challenging Homophobia Education (NICHE). For almost two decades he has worked to challenge homophobia in schools and rural communities, including a 266-consecutive day drive around rural Australia to challenge homophobia one cuppa at a time. Daniel wrote a book about the journey, Beyond Priscilla, which followed his first book, Beyond ‘That’s So Gay’: Challenging homophobia in Australian schools. He also has the only formally-evaluated LGBTI educational package for schools, Pride & Prejudice, which was first piloted in an all-boys Catholic school in 1999.

Karen Parker
Karen is a PhD student at La Trobe University, and a former counsellor at NTV. She is interested in cutting across the lines which separate concepts of ‘queer’ and ‘straight’ in the context of family violence, and will discuss the experiences of abuse and violence from a transgender and gender-diverse viewpoint.

George Munro
George is Queer officer at La Trobe University and is an energetic queer activist. George will be speaking about the experiences of discrimination, violence and abuse from a “genderqueer” point of view.

Kylie Lloyd
Kylie is a Master of Social Work student working with NTV and will also present the findings from the research she conducted, “Homophobia and Men’s Behavioural Change Work – The study of intersections between forms of oppression, domination and discrimination related to gender violence and homophobia”.
